On February 16th, 2019 we celebrated the achievements of this year’s winners and their teachers at the American University in Blagoevgrad. All participants had the opportunity to visit the university campus and ask questions about academic and student life. The students participated in a creative writing workshop facilitated by Michael Cohen – Associate Professor at AUBG. The teachers took part in a session focusing on flash fiction led by Oliver Steel – Head of Teaching Centre at British Council.
The award ceremony itself was a true celebration of creativity. During the course of the evening we presented all winning works and had the opportunity to meet the young writers, their teachers and parents. We had a guest performance by the AUBG Musical “Hair”. Two of this year’s winners also performed during the ceremony. Alexandra Sarieva sang two beautiful songs and Elizaveta Malyanova read her own poetry. Our partners from MMTV arranged for Orlin Pavlov – a famous Bulgarian singer, to record a video and greet all of this year’s winners.
The students and their teachers received prizes provided by CORPluS Foundation, Klett and Express Publishing, Mondelez and AUBG. The American University in Blagoevgrad awarded Iliyan Svechev from Petrich with a three-week international summer camp and Ivana Ivanova from Vratsa with an intensive TOEFL course. The special prize provided by British Council – a free CAE exam, was awarded to Dimitar Zhelezov from Silistra. Elizaveta Malyanova from Bourgas received the special prize in the name of the American writer Cynthia Phoel who was a former Peace Corps volunteer in Bulgaria. This year our partners from Elizabeth Kostova Foundation provided scholarships for three of the winners to attend a workshop on Flash Fiction. The CORPlus Foundation provided special awards for all 1st place winners – one week English language camp for 6th and 7th graders, one week at the AUBG international summer camp for 8th, 10th and 11th graders and Orange book store gift vouchers for 9th and 12th graders.
The award ceremony marked the closing of this year’s campaign and we are now looking forward to the 10th Bulgarian Creative Writing Competition. We want to thank all our partners for their generous contributions towards our project: US Embassy in Sofia, American University in Bulgaria, British Council and AVO Language and Examinations Center.
